From the Pastor’s Desk 1/18/2018

Last Sunday, I talked about Choice Options for the New Year. Choice options result in decisions being made. Sometimes the fear of making difficult decisions causes us to procrastinate until the decision is made for us. We feel kind of like the paratrooper who was asked how many jumps he had to his credit. He said, “Twenty-five.” But then he hesitantly said, “Really only one. The first twenty-four I had to be pushed.” We often make easy decisions naturally, but the “big ones” are another story. I read an article that offered the following guidelines when we feel pressured to make difficult decisions:

What does the Bible say about it? (Psalm 119:105)

What will it cost in terms of money and/or commitment? (Luke 14:28-30)

How will it affect you and others? (1 Corinthians 6:12; 8:9)

Will it hinder your obedience to God? (Luke 11:42)

What do spiritually mature people you respect say about it? (Proverbs 15:22).

If you feel pressed to make a difficult decision and are unsure about what to do, consider the above questions and ask the Lord to block any action you might take that would be a mistake. Then prayerfully make your decision and trust that God is accomplishing His will and plan in your life. The Bible says that if you need wisdom during a testing time, ask God and He will generously give it to you (James 1:5-8). However, if you really want God to lead, you must be willing to follow. And as the hymn says, “Trust and obey, for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.”
