There are some people who think the words patriotic and worship don’t belong together. They think that when we sing songs about America, we are elevating our country to an equal plane with God or above God. When this happens, our country then becomes the object of our worship, and our singing is misdirected and even offensive to God.
I happen to believe our congregation and most others that sing patriotic songs in worship services are aware of the appropriate lines in our minds and hearts between our God and our country. Our best loved patriotic hymns actually address God when we sing, “America, America, God shed His grace on thee” and “Long may our land be bright with freedom’s holy light; protect us by Thy might, Great God, our King!” We are patriotic as we worship when we sing these prayers and others asking God to bless America.
This Sunday our choir will present the patriotic musical, “America, Keep Singing!” Please come and invite a friend or neighbor to join us for great music, preaching, baptism, and worship, followed by a BBQ dinner. Glory! Glory, hallelujah! Our God is marching on.
