Dana and I were taking some time off after Christmas and decided to tour the Marland Mansion and Estate in Ponca City. If you don’t know the history, E.W. Marland discovered oil in Oklahoma way back in the early years of statehood. He went from having just a little money to being a multi-millionaire in just a few years. He started his own oil company, built a beautiful home, built a second home that is an impressive mansion, spread his oil money around Oklahoma, entertained the rich and famous, and years later served as the governor of Oklahoma.
The idea of quickly becoming a multi-millionaire is still very popular today—thus the lottery, casinos, etc. The problem is, God didn’t tell us to seek riches, He told us to seek His kingdom! God’s kingdom revolves around living up to the very reason we were created in the image of God—so that we can reflect his glory. The first step in reflecting His glory is believing and trusting in Christ as Savior. But then what? In his book Unshakeable Hope, Max Lucado says, “The New Testament describes a progressive work of God to shape us into His image. As we fellowship with God, read His word, obey His commands, and seek to understand His character, something wonderful emerges…God comes out of us. We say things God would say. We do things God would do. We forgive; we share, and we love.”
As we start a New Year together, let’s seek first the kingdom of God and let God’s image shine in us. We can say along with King David, “As for me, I will see Your face in righteousness; I shall be satisfied when I awake in Your likeness.” Psalm 17:15
