The Role of Music in Worship – Reece’s Pieces 10/18/2018

For many years now, there has been a focus on “vertical” worship – singing songs that directly address God in worship services.  Even though we include vertical worship songs every Sunday, various other types of songs also play a critical role in corporate worship.  Here are some of them:

Testimony Songs – these songs express the way God is helping us through trials, blessing us through victories, or reaching down into the pit to save us. We celebrate through music, commiserate through music, and witness through music.

Preaching Songs – many songs preach the message of Christ’s love, salvation, grace, mercy, forgiveness, healing, strength, etc., in a very powerful way.

Edification Songs – these songs edify the body of Christ through expressions of praise, faith, and assurance.  Many times, these song lyrics are straight from scripture.

Prayer Songs – these songs cry out to God for forgiveness, salvation, understanding, healing, mercy, guidance, etc.  The passion in these songs helps us express sincere heart-felt prayers to the Lord.

As we sing together, we are ushered into the presence of God.  During these times, even unbelievers can sense the Spirit of God at work.  Bottom line: Worship is an appropriate response to the greatness of God in every type of song we sing!

“Praise Him! Praise Him! Ever in joyful song!”
