Freedom’s Calling ~ Reece’s Pieces 7-1-2022

As we approach the Fourth of July weekend, take time to consider and appreciate our freedoms.   As citizens of the United States, we celebrate many freedoms that residents of other nations can only wish for – speech, press, religion (worship), assembly, etc.  The preamble to our constitution states that the constitution itself seeks to “secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity.”  We thank God, and the many American heroes who fought for our freedoms, for the “Blessings of Liberty” we enjoy today.

The Bible says that believers in Christ Jesus are also citizens of the household of God (Ephesians 2:19-22).  In Philippians 3:20, the apostle Paul calls us “citizens of Heaven.”  This citizenship celebrates a different kind of freedom.  Christ followers are free from the bondage of sin.  Because of the cross of Christ, the blood of Christ, and the resurrection of Christ, those who place their faith in Christ are recipients of God’s grace, forgiveness, and redemption, and lay claim to this freedom in Christ.  In truth, the hope for America and all the world is this freedom in Christ – Jesus saves!  Song-writers Travis Cottrell and David Moffitt wrote these lyrics that the choir will sing on Sunday:

Freedom’s calling, chains are falling, hope is dawning bright and true.
Day is breaking, night is quaking, God is making all things new.  Jesus saves!
O to grace, how great a debtor, Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
Are the saints who shout together, “Jesus saves!  Jesus saves!”
Rising up so vast and strong, lifting up salvation’s song;
The redeemed will sing forever, “Jesus saves!”
