Remember the Bible story and the scripture song you learned as a kid about the foolish man who built his house upon the sand and the wise man who built his house upon the rock? The verse about the wise man says, “The rains came down and the floods came up and the house on the rock stood firm!”
Foundations are not the kind of things that get a lot of attention nowadays. Most of the home and garden television shows are about the décor of a house, not the foundation. Even “This Old House” spends very little time on foundations. There’s more glamour in the finishing details, the trim, the colors, the architectural features, the building methods, and things that are pleasing to the eye.
The Bible, on the other hand, mentions foundations and cornerstones over and over. Not only are we told to build houses upon the rock, but the church will be built upon the rock of Jesus Christ. Jesus is even identified as the chief cornerstone. “This Jesus is the stone which was despised and rejected by you, the builders, but which became the chief Cornerstone.” Acts 4:11
Through the years, songwriters inspired by these themes have written songs like “The Solid Rock,” “The Church’s One Foundation,” “In Times Like These,” “How Firm a Foundation,” “Cornerstone,” etc. These songs remind us of the importance of having the right foundation and the right building materials for our lives and for our church.
Check your foundation. What are you building on? Are you building on sinking sand or the Solid Rock? I hope you’ll plan to come to our Winter Bible Study led by Bobby Kelly next week. It will be a great opportunity to strengthen your foundation!
